There is nothing more frustrating than backing under a trailer and hearing the kingpin hit metal, but the latch failing to engage. If your fifth wheel won't lock, do not force it. Check these three common culprits immediately.
This is the most common driver error. If the trailer is too high, the kingpin will bypass the locking jaws and end up in front of the fifth wheel throat.
The Fix: Lower the trailer landing gear until the fifth wheel tilts slightly backward upon contact.
In freezing temperatures or if maintenance has been neglected, the cam and springs can get stuck.
The Fix: Spray a penetrating oil (like WD-40) on the release handle spring and the locking cam. Work the handle back and forth to free the mechanism. Note: This is a temporary fix—you likely need a thorough degreasing.
If the mechanism moves but won't snap shut around the kingpin, your adjustment rod might be out of spec, or the jaws are physically worn down.
The Diagnostic: Use a Fifth Wheel Lock Tester. If the jaws close but remain loose around the tester, it is time to install a Repair Kit. Continuing to drive with loose jaws risks a dropped trailer.
